Yoga is the union of the internal and physical. It includes movement (asana), breath (pranayama), and finger positions (mudras) that impact emotions, thoughts, and physical well being. Research has shown that yoga improves strength, balance, flexibility, lowers blood pressure, reduces anxiety, improves back pain, and relaxation. Sessions usually last 60 to 90 minutes. The training for yoga teachers requires 200 hours of study.
Yoga therapy uses specific yogic tools as a modality to address physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual issues. Assessments are completed to identify current concerns. An intervention is designed and implemented to address identified goals. The outcomes are evaluated and homework is provided to continue efforts to reach desired outcomes. Sessions usually last an hour. Training for yoga therapists requires completion of a 200 hour certification and an 800 hour Yoga Therapy Teacher Training program.
